Whiteread work mostly with sculpture and everyday objects. She casts these objects to create ghostly replicas. By casting these objects, she gives them significance, freeing them from any roles and allowing them to just be a form. Familiar objects made from unfamiliar materials creates a nostalgic effect because of the disconnect highlighting what is missing and what is present. The process of looking, emptying, and filling run throughout her work. Theobjects she casts- mattress, beds, sinks, chairs- all have an intimate, physical relationship to the body. The objects she uses are always second hand, so they have had an unknown life prior to Whiteread, which is brought to the work. Many of her objects that she works with she picked up years ago and felt a need to hold onto them without knowing why. She describes her collection of objects as her sketchbook.
