Lucy Harrison- Social Cement

Social cement took place at the Tate by Lucy Harrison, an artist based in London, who works on collaborative projects within the public realm. She involved key community groups of Lambeth and Southwark and will invite them to take part in events that explore ides around different ways that people inhabit space and make connections to different artworks on display. The aim is to bring in aspects of the community. The programme involved events and talks on varying subjects from gardening to bingo. The aim was for everyone to come together and create a shared community room representing the area.

A final event included a playlist of music collected during the project, silkscreen printing of positive and political messages, and bread and salt (an eastern European welcome ceremony) using bread designed in collaboration with Tate pastry chefs. A publication, designed by Lucy and printed at Aldgate Press, documented the project.

The project was entirely centred around the community and aimed to bring the key characteristics of the area together to be enjoyed. Although the outcome was art, it was accessible to everyone.
