Glasgow Harbour tiled underpass

Cycled through the underpass connecting Partick to Glasgow Harbour housing development and noticed the decorated ceramic tiles. I photographed them and now done some research on them. They were designed by local primary school children in 2005. Deborah Campbell is a local mixed media and textile artist. As the Glasgow harbour was a large new housing development, the decorated underpass is a symbolic of Partick welcoming the harbour into their community. The colour scheme also connects the river clyde to the green spaces of Partick. The mostly weathered well although on some of the tiles you could see the sealant peeling off.

Two of the tiled panels describe the story behind the project.

Glasgow Harbour 2005

The improvements to this underpass were implemented as

part of the Glasgow harbour development, with the

express aim of linking the Partick and Glasgow

Harbour communities and providing better access to the

River Clyde waterfront.

This included a community arts project involving pupils

from local primary schools and local artist

Deborah Campbell

Primary 4 pupils help to design and produce the tile

panels displayed here, each of which shows their own

interpretation of the history of Partick and the River

Clyde, including well known landmark buildings, cranes

and ships.
